Career : Managing Director of Punjab restaurant in Neal
Street, Soho. Took over from his grandfather Gurbachan Singh Maan who
opened the restaurant in the City in 1947 moving it to Soho in 1951.
The restaurant introduced one of the first tandoor ovens in Britain
in 1962.
Today, the Punjab is the oldest North Indian restaurant in the UK,
serving generations of diners in the heart of London?s theatre land.
The Restaurant will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2007 and
boasts customers from all over the world and from all walks of life,
including actors Martin Short and Raj Kapoor, as well as a host of
doctors, lawyers and politicians.
After a while, it was not only Indian students frequenting the
restaurant, as local people came to tantalise their taste buds?.
Some customers have been coming for more than 30 years now, and there
is one 76 year-old regular who has been coming since 1952. He loved
the Punjabi cuisine so much that for forty years, he dined at the
Punjab twice a day, five days a week.
Mr Maan is a prominent member of the Covent Garden Community
Association Committee. Chairman of the Multi Faith Group and Sikh
representative in talks with NHS. |
