Born in Chittagong, Bangladesh in 1950. In 1979 arrived in Scotland
to study Economics at Stirling University. Shahid is married with
three children - Tarique (29), Tayeeba (14) and Ariyan (2) with
another child on the way. The family live close to the Indian Cavalry
Club in Edinburgh's West End.
Career : In 1980 following a summer job at a Glasgow curry
house, Shahid opened Maharajah Curry House in Alloa to help fund his
studies. He sold the restaurant in 1982 and paid off his student debt
In 1984 returned to Stirling University to begin his PhD, which he
abandoned in favour of joining the Graduate Enterprise Programme
In 1986 opened the Indian Cavalry Club in its original place
on Athol Place following guidance from his mentor Jack McMillan from
the Edinburgh Venture Enterprise
After the disaster in 1991, which killed more than 500,000 people, Mr
Chowdhury set up Scottish Care for Bangladesh. The charity has been
working in the Chakoria area of the Bay of Bengal providing health
care for the many women widowed by the cyclone.
In 1992 established charitable organisation - Shahidul Alam
Foundation (SAF). SAF currently employs 30 people and provides
community medical care to the poor people in Chittagong as well as
low-cost capital support to people setting up micro-enterprises in
the Cox's Bazer area of Bangladesh. At present, SAF employs 30 people. |
