Born in Kenya to Indian immigrant parents, Sanjay Majhu moved to the
UK with his family in 1972
Career : He has come a long way since the early 90's when he
was waiting on tables at the Spice of Life. Sanjay Majhu, has now
built a business empire that turns over some 20-million pounds a year
"The restaurant business was something I wanted to do at a young
age. I was quite inspired when I went into the Shish Mahal in Gibson
Street in the early days. I was never in it for the money. It was to
do with buzz and excitement and running a restaurant for the passion
and enjoyment . In 1990, I bought my first restaurant but I was too
embarrassed to ask for advice and it closed after three months. Then
I found another place and had to borrow money to fund it. That closed
as well. It was the worst time of my life."
Sanjay decided to change course midstream, and studied for a degree
in pharmacy. He qualified in 1999 and soon established the Apple
Pharamacy Group, which now has 10 branches which won the Scottish
Business Development award at the Scottish Pharmacy Awards in 2007.
Then in March 2005, there came an opportunity of a lifetime and
Sanjay Majhu took over the ownership of Glasgow-based Harlequin
Leisure Group, and the title of Scotland's Curry King from his
long-time friend Charan Gill MBE in an £8 million deal.

Asian Jewel Awards sponsored by Lloyds TSB.
