Born in Kashmir in 1967 and came to UK aged 10.
Career : The son of a foundry worker, Saleem left school at
16, and tried his hand as a grocer and butcher before starting his
first restaurant, the 45-cover Viceroy of India, in Monkgate, York,
in 1991.
Saleem is the boss and head of the family business running the
award-winning Jinnah Restaurant group, which now boasts seven
restaurants and two takeaway outlets across North, West and South
Yorkshire, plus a 20,000 sq ft cash and carry wholesale outlet in
Bradford which even supplies his rivals.
Jinnah restaurants include outlets in Haxby, Helmsley, Monkgate in
York and Harrogate, all with the lavish dEcor that is the Jinnah hallmark.
He and his brothers, Zafer and Mahmood constantly move between the
restaurants to ensure high standards of food are maintained. Traditionally-dressed
waiters serve cuisine selected from regions ranging from Kashmir and
Afghanistan to the Punjab and Persia.
Charity : when it comes to charity, he is not parochial,
having raised £34,000 from customers friends and family for the
Kashmir Earthquake Appeal and £5,500 for the International
Plastic Surgeonis Society which helps victims of natural disasters
all over the world. |
