Born 12 Sep 1913 died 11 Aug 1995.Kenneth Lo, the 'Chinese
Englishman', was famous as a cookery writer, tennis player and
restaurateur. Married to Ann. Died in hospital after short illness.
Career - Came to Britain in1936; attending Cambridge
University before working for the Chinese Consulate. Became a Davis
Cup tennis player; visited the 1936 Olympic Games; organised Chinese
dock workers in Liverpool into a trade union; met wartime Chinese
ship wreck survivor Poon Lim; writing a successful series of Chinese
cookery books which led to the opening of the 'Memories of China'
restaurant in London in 1980 as well as a shop and cookery school. He
also painted.
He wrote his first book on Chinese cookery in 1954, which sold 10,000
copies in hardback. At the time, Mr Lo hardly cooked, but he decided
to learn and produced the book in three weeks. Many recipes were
translated direct from Chinese cooking manuscripts. In total, he
wrote 40 books, and worked for both Egon Ronay and the Good Food
Guide. |
