Born 1955 in Hong Kong. Married in Beijing in 1983. His businesses
range from the ultra-chic boutique chain Shanghai Tang to aviation
and gold-mining. He has two grown-up children from his first
marriage, and lives in Hong Kong with his wife, Lucy
Career : Started the Shanghai Tang, a global Chinese clothing
company, in 1994. Founder of China Clubs in Hong Kong, Peking and
Singapore. He owns the Cipriani, London's most egregiously overpriced
restaurant. His latest project is a Chinese restaurant offering
authentic, no-frills Cantonese cooking in The Dorchester hotel, where
the concept of no-frills is interpreted slightly differently. But
still, this China Tang - with its menu of Cantonese classics, made
using high-quality ingredients and without MSG by a top Hong Kong
chef is brilliant.
Became Sir David Tang in the New Year Honours 2008, in recognition of
his charity work. Sir Davids colourful upbringing, remarkably
generous spirit and always challenging opinions can be enjoyed in his
book, An Apple a Day.
